Walking out from the infamy of dioxin – Luermen rekindles its glory days
Located near the spot where Ming Dynasty general Cheng Cheng-kung (鄭成功) landed in Taiwan, Tainan’s Luermen Community is of great historical significance. The area boasts countless attractions including old Japanese-style dormitory buildings and the Luermen Matsu Temple, not to mention stunning natural beauty like that seen in Sicao Mangrove Reserve. In the past, however, incineration of scrap metal resulted in severe dioxin poisoning in the area, which took a heavy toll on local industries. Fortunately, thanks to the unflagging determination and struggle of locals, Luermen is slowly rekindling its former glory days.
Luermen Community Director Cai Deng-jin (蔡登進) is a key figure in the community and has spearheaded the reconstruction of Taiwan Sugar Railways heritage. The initiative is rebuilding strength in the community through a raft of projects and activities that aim to redevelop local industry in combination with the area’s rich historical culture, thereby rekindling the centuries-old elegance and magnificence of Luermen’s golden years.
