Urban eyesore transformed into green space
The rubbish in Nangang's Fudekeng used to produce a vile stench that affected the surrounding area; fortunately, the former landfill site was transformed into a vibrant environmental restoration park. Taipei City Government also collaborated with private companies to install solar panels in the park, thereby creating Taipei Energy Hill, which by the end of 2017, had generated more than 2 million kilowatt-hours of electricity - roughly the energy consumption of 5,200 households in Taipei.
Though Fudekeng has seen a total transformation in the past 20 years, only time will tell whether the biogas, heavy metals and radiation pollutants from the former landfill have been adequately disposed of and continued monitoring is necessary to safeguard the environment and people. Thanks to lots of hard work from the government and civil society, we can all look forward to the return of plants and wildlife, like the flocks of little egrets already returning.
