Taipei senior citizen study & meal project launched
Taipei City Government is about to begin a large-scale promotion of a project that will provide a free meal to senior citizens. In May of this year, Xingbang Village in Wenshan District began implementing a pilot scheme to provide free study and a free meal. A combination of diligent work and organization from the local borough warden has helped to enlist the help of retired school principles, teachers and local residents with various professional skills to teach a selection of handicrafts and health activities.
With no venue to cook meals, the borough warden coordinated with a local restaurant to provide delicious piping hot meals for the elderly participants. Each Wednesday, everyone is invited to remain after class and share a meal together as a way to encourage senior citizens to get out of the house and interact with people.
Since its introduction, the pilot scheme has received a great deal of extremely positive feedback. Many elderly participants have expressed their delight at feeling a palpable change for the better and taking a step in the right direction in everything from everyday living and health to social interactions.
