Taike Story’s beach cleanup helps protect Qixingtan Beach
On August 20, a beach cleanup event took place at Qixingtan Beach. The event was organized through the Facebook fan page of Taiwan Taike Story (台客劇場) and assisted by Hualien Marine Conservation Association (花蓮縣海洋生態保育協會). Hualien, the first stop on the TK Summer Beach Cleaning tour of Taiwan, attracted the participation of close to 200 people for this joint endeavor.
In addition to seeing the usual plastic bottles and plastic bags, Qixingtan Beach is also awash with empty fluorescent fish lure packets left by night fishermen, who recklessly discard their trash along the shoreline; one other interesting item that is particular to Qixingtan Beach is whetstones. Following the event, many people stayed on to continue helping with the cleanup operation and carefully sorting out the garbage. Interestingly, no one looked fatigued from the day’s cleanup event, but instead, appeared satisfied with the results of this common effort to make the beach cleaner place.
