Blessed with baking – Bravely pursuing dreams in the east of Taiwan
On July 15, the 2017 Social Enterprise Market opened in Taipei Railway Station, displaying a delicious array of bread and desserts from mobile stalls. A few smiling mothers from the Yu-Ai Happy Women’s Bakery (宇愛幸福婦女烘焙工坊) punctuated the lively throng’s hubbub to hawk their wares. However, these women are not just selling bread, they are also bravely pursuing a dream.
Yu-Ai Happy Women’s Bakery is a service center established by Hualien's International Cultural Educational Foundation (ICEF). Its main purpose is to help disadvantaged women from the region learn skills and build self-confidence. The bakery uses an integrated approach, taking baking as the foundation and augmenting it with production and marketing skills. The workshop cooperates with local schools and the community to help disadvantaged women participate in neighborhood activities, thereby creating a family atmosphere in the community.
