Little Taijiang students produce drama to protect the endemic cicada

Throughout last semester, teachers and students from Little Taijiang Study Club in Haidian Elementary School used free time after school to produce the drama ‘SOS for Taiwan’s Cicada’. During the process, they not only interviewed local fishermen to understand the history of Chengxi shelterbelt in Taijiang National Park - which was established during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan - but also researched the ecology of Taiwan’s indigenous cicada (Taiwanosemia hoppoensis). The teachers and students hope the drama will be a reminder to the government and local residents that garbage reduction and protecting Taiwan’s cicada habitat are essential in ensuring a sustainable future for Taijiang. 

Fisherman Wu Qin-yu (吳秦宇) said the drama gave him a better understanding of the crisis facing Taiwan’s native cicada and Chengxi shelterbelt. He hopes that through everyone’s joint effort, pressure can be put on the local government to save the cicada and its habitat. 

The drama was performed when British primatologist Dame Jane Morris Goodall visited Taijiang River Basin Society (台江流域學習社群), when it was officially staged at the entrance to Hai-wei Tsao-Huang Temple (海尾朝皇宮). In addition, it was also shown at the auditorium in Haidian Elementary School, inviting all teachers and students at the school to come together and protect Taiwan's native cicadas.

小台江為台灣暗蟬創作，以戲劇的力量守護家鄉

海佃國小《小台江〉師生，利用這學期課餘時間，創作編排《守護台灣暗蟬：蛣蛚，蛣蛚，SOS》。他們採訪台江漁民耆老，了解台江國家公園城西防風林，從日治時期開始的造林故事，以及研究城西防風林珍貴的台灣暗蟬生態，透過戲劇的創作，展開一連串的排演，小台江師生希望以戲劇，倡議提醒政府及市民，做好垃圾減量，保護台灣暗蟬棲地，才能創造永續發展的台江家園。
        
水手吳秦宇表示，演戲讓他更進一步的了解臺灣暗蟬和城西防風林目前所處的危機，他希望能夠透過大家的力量，一起來跟政府爭取讓臺灣暗蟬留下來的機會，不要讓暗蟬的棲息地受到破壞。

這部戲除了在珍古德博士參訪台江流域學習社群時，正式在海尾朝皇宮廟口演出外，也在海佃國小禮堂公演，邀請全校師生共同守護台灣暗蟬。
