Constructed in the 1960s, Wanhua’s Nanjichang community was the first residential complex of its kind to be built in Taipei. Today, the once avant-garde community is in a state of serious disrepair and populated with a high proportion of elderly, mentally and physically disabled, and up to 300 low-income families. As a result, many social welfare groups are active in the community, trying to help these vulnerable residents.
On November 27, a group of young social workers set up Taiwan Community Practice Association (台灣社區實踐協會) and launched Grassroots Empowerment Market (培根市集活動), which connects fifteen local organizations to foster the spirit of self-help, mutual assistance, and grassroots empowerment. So the next time you visit Nanjichang, why not take a look at how this alliance of social welfare groups is helping to unify the community and foster the ideology of a cooperative economy.
