Youth photo exhibition – Seeing beyond Maolin’s purple butterfly
The North Kaohsiung Center of Taiwan Fund for Children and Families began working in Maolin last year and this year implemented a specially designed program aimed at empowering the local youth. Based around traditional arts and crafts and photography, the program syllabus can hopefully provide the youth with a better understanding of their homeland and spread the unique characteristics of Maolin.
At the exhibition, in addition to showing young people’s cross-stitch and leatherwork handicrafts, the youngsters’ photographic work also caught the eye of many tourists. While taking the pictures – most of which were taken in the local vicinity of Maolin – the youngsters realized that the places they used to take for granted are in fact incredibly beautiful, especially through the lens.
The aim of holding this exhibition was not only to convey the cultural atmosphere of Maolin but also, more importantly, to let young people enjoy the recognition from visitors during the process of explaining their work. It was clear from their expressions that the youngsters were incredibly touched to see people enjoying their photos.
