Water warriors risking their life to save people – 28 years of selfless service
In 1989, following the continual discovery of drowned individuals in Bitan, a lake in Xindian, a group of local swimming lovers from Xindian established Taiwan’s first voluntary water rescue team. Comprehensive monthly training equips the team to provide support at the scene of national disasters. Today, the group has been running for nearly 30 years and have witnessed countless national disasters including the 1999 Jiji Earthquake, Typhoon Morakot disaster, and the TransAsia Airways Flight 235 aviation crash. The group is now looking to recruit new blood into the ranks and continue making an important contribution to Taiwan’s society.
