Living alone but not lonely – Painting and exercising opens new vistas for seniors
At the Nangang branch of HONDAO Senior Citizens Welfare Foundation (弘道老人福利基金會), social workers and volunteers employ an array of interesting activities to care for senior citizens who live alone or are vulnerable; currently, a total of 26 seniors are participating in the activities. The group of seniors meets every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, where volunteers lead them through a simple exercise routine and drawing lesson. With an average age of 80 years, the activities use simple drawing exercises that appeal to elderly people’s timeless sense of innocent wonder and a smorgasbord of appealing activities that motivate them to get up and go. Though of advanced years, 84-year-old Chen Ji-chuan (陳吉川), a community volunteer who attends the group meetings, is still very young at heart. Chen Ji-chuan, a passionate reader, believes that with a positive, optimistic outlook one is less susceptible to mental atrophy.
