Meet the aging citizens with intellectual developmental disorders
Chensenmei Social Welfare Foundation (真善美社會福利基金會) is located in Zhongli District, Taoyuan City. It is the first institution in Taiwan to provide professional care for aging people with an intellectual disability. Established with the aim of addressing the difficult predicament that double-aging families face, Chensenmei Social Welfare Foundation goes some way to relieving the the burden on the elderly parents of people with an intellectual disability - a social issue that definitely requires more community and government attention and assistance. In fact, it was the unwillingness of so many institutions to accept aging people with an intellectual disability that inspired Chensenmei Social Welfare Foundation to open its new facility.
Director of Chensenmei Social Welfare Foundation, Huang Xiao-fang (黃小芳), indicated that people with an intellectual disability are considered “elderly” once they pass forty five years of age. With the age of parents ranging from sixty to eighty years old, taking care of children with an intellectual disability is very problematic, especially with regards to ensuring they receive proper medical treatment.
