Used hospital beds journey 50km to new home
Recently, Hualien Mennonite Hospital renewed two older hand-cranked beds as part of an equipment upgrade. The beds, which were still in tip-tip condition and functioning normally, were disinfected and transported nearly 50 kilometers to the small health center in Hualien County’s Guangfu Elementary School, helping to create a better campus health center.
The situation came about after a local social worker observed that the school’s small health center was only equipped with a tough wooden bed. Fearing cross-infection problems, the social worker sought to improve the school’s care environment and decided to contact local hospitals to see if they would be willing to donate any old beds. In view of the fact that the beds were second-hand, the hospital and social worker first contacted the school to see if it would be a willing recipient. After getting affirmative feedback, second-hand beds in good condition were selected from the Material Management Section, giving them a new lease of life.
