Farmer-calligrapher Huang Rui-lin
Born into a poor family in the rural village of Ruili in Chiayi’s Meishan Township, 60-year old farmer and calligrapher, Huang Rui-lin (黃瑞霖), dropped out of school after graduating from elementary school. Passionate about calligraphy, when he wasn’t assisting his family farming, Huang Rui-lin would spend his time quietly sitting in the corner of the room, scribbling in a carefree manner. As the years passed, Huang Rui-lin’s calligraphy gained depth and he began developing his own unique style, earning him the nickname of “farmer-calligrapher”.
After middle age, Huang Rui-lin and his wife began traveling throughout Taiwan visiting famous calligraphors and calligraphy exhibitions. From that point on, Huang Rui-lin was no longer just a farmer-calligrapher, but also a collector of fine calligraphy. Now a well-known name in the art and literature scene, the life journey of self-taught calligrapher Huang Rui-lin makes him a wonderful model for all children growing up in rural Taiwan.
