326 No Nukes Day: Farewell to nuclear energy - Tokyo demo
With this year marking the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and the 5th anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, the 6th No Nukes Day demo in Japan was on a very special scale. The demo demanded the abolition of all nuclear power plants, and called for the participation of more people to generate pressure on the government and power industry. Taking place in Tokyo’s Yoyogi Park, this year’s grand demo was subdivided into three smaller demos according to the individual nature of each one – Abolish Nuclear Power, Connection to Fukushima, and No Bases, No Wars.
The event included an eclectic mix of lectures, performances, groups airing grievances, academics and victims from the Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear disasters. In the wake of 311, the road to recovery appears to be far off in the distant future, the pain of which is greatest for the victims who are still a long way from returning to their cherished homes. Adding insult to injury, Japan has used the up-and-coming 2020 Olympics as grounds for the continuing support of nuclear power, a decision that has invoked widespread condemnation.

326 No Nukes Day: 告別核電東京大遊行
