Environmental temples modernize
In a bid to reduce the air pollution problem, Chiayi’s Matsu Temple (慈雲宮) has collaborated with the Department of Environmental Protection to provide Taiwan’s first vending machine that dispenses bags of “peace” rice instead of joss paper.
Similarly, Tainan’s Dung-Yue Temple (東嶽殿) is reducing air pollution through the installation of an eco-friendly furnace, Taiwan’s only 100% eco-friendly temple furnace for burning joss paper. Joss paper burned at the temple goes through a comprehensive three-part refining procedure, before being manually bagged up and sent to the Department of Environmental Protection for recycling.
Both temples have attempted to break through Taiwanese traditions and face the effects of burning joss paper head on. It is hoped that by promoting such ideas, we can safeguard our environment and ensure the next generation enjoys clear skies.
