Have you ever seen a mobile Tudigong temple
According to legend, the birthdate of Tudigong (Earth god) is on August 15 of the lunar calendar each year. This year marked the 5th Tudigong Culture Festival raised by New Taipei City’s Zhonghe District, at which forty-two Tudigongs toured the district on tricycles. The procession of tricycles, which saw the participation of countless children, made for a truly spectacular, albeit, rather strange scene. Along the way, the mobile Tudigongs dispensed ceremonial Chinese gold ingots, as a symbol of blessings and good fortune to passersby. Dragon and lion dances brought even more of a carnival atmosphere to the folk festival.
With the aim of acquainting a greater number of people with folk customs, the festival has injected modern ideas into this tradition, transforming the ancient Tudigong deity into a contemporary icon. Though the external form of religious beliefs change with the times, the respect and devotion that forms the foundation of such beliefs, remain important guiding principles.
