Boycott at Taixing Elementary School on first day of school term
On August 31, elementary schools around the country began the first day of the new term. However, at Taixing Elementary School in Meishan Township, Chiayi County, a lack of prior communication with parents regarding the process of transitioning into a new teaching system, resulted in parent dissatisfaction and strikes at the behest of the school’s parents’ association. Hearing news of the strike, the county education officer immediately visited the school to address the situation.
Headmistress at the school, Zeng Yue-zhao (曾月照), said: “The incident happened because parents were dissatisfied with the county’s decision to change the original plan of transitioning Xingping Elementary School into an ‘alternative school or forest school’ to a ‘mixed-age experimental elementary school’. When the plan failed to meet parents’ expectations, the parent’s association decided to launch a collective boycott of classes, taking a day’s leave as a technical way to achieve it.”
