Thieves enter Cat Village
The reputation of Houtong Cat Village in Ruifang District, New Taipei City, has spread far and wide over the years. Today, as well as many cat admirers, the village’s fame attracts both people who come to abandon their cats, and those who come with the special purpose of stealing cats. Village resident, “Black Coal Cat Grandma (黑煤貓阿嬤)”, said that cat thieves target particularly beautiful cats. Tinned cat food laced with sleeping pills is used to lure the cats, which after eating the food and falling asleep, are captured and taken to be sold by the thieves. Lucky cats may find a good home and live a comfortable life, but the unlucky ones, are often fated to abuse and being abandoned for a second time.
Black Coal Cat Grandma has been raising cats in Houlong for 15 years and has currently over 80 mature cats. Thieves are continually stealing the cats that Black Coal Cat Grandma puts her heart and soul into providing a safe a secure home for. Even with police assistance, she has been unable to curb this vile behavior of the thieves.
Without receiving any money or accepting any donations from the public for the compassionate work she does, Black Coal Cat Grandma relies on selling a few small souvenirs to help supplement the cost of raising the cats. In spite of the fact that her income does not cover the cost of looking after the cats, Black Coal Cat Grandma is determined not to give up caring for them.
