Recovering the beauty of Cui Lake through restoration of firefly habitat
Muzha Cui Lake (木柵翠湖) is a rare city wetland ecosystem located within Mucha Park (木柵公園). Unfortunately, the release of invasive alien species into the pond earlier in the year has seriously endangered the habitat of indigenous species. In a bid to capture these invasive alien species and restore firefly habitat, Wenshan Community College has collaborated with Taipei City Government, raising 1600 soil bags made from recycled T-shirts and coffee bean sacks.
On July 12, over a hundred volunteers used the soil bags to build an earthen dike, providing a segregated shelter pond for the protection of indigenous species in Cui Lake. Following the dike’s completion, July 18 & 25 will be spent removing invasive alien species, and on August 10, bottom soil from the pond will be excavated and filled into bags. Sediment disturbance caused while removing the invasive alien species hiding in the soil will also help increase oxygen levels, aiding firefly habitat restoration.
