Old building transformed into “Mix” art center

After returning to her home in Chiayi some years ago, Tsai Ming-xuan (蔡明璇), who studied Drama in France, and her cartoonist husband Gao Da-wei (高大衛), felt compelled to return something to the area; the first step to achieving this was renovating Ming-xuan’s old family home. First they tidied up the old place and retained any usable old wood, which would become the building material for fixing up the old house. After a year, their vision of “Mix” - a mixed art space - is beginning to take shape. 
  
With Chiayi rather lacking in theatre spaces, unlike the renovation of most other old houses that are generally for the catering industry, “Mix” is attempting to provide a space that combines drama, exhibitions, music, dance and various other kinds of performances, giving young people and students in the area a stage on which to unleash their creative spirit. In the course of realizing their dream, the couple has experienced not only a great deal of joy, but also many bottlenecks, which they have had to overcome, repeatedly testing their renovation knowledge. In the course of renovating “Mix”, it is hoped that many more people will be inspired to place greater importance on the restoration of old buildings.

米克斯老屋欣力

在法國主修戲劇的蔡明璇，與夫婿漫畫創作者高大衛，多年前回到故鄉嘉義，一直想為家鄉做一些事情，以修復自家老屋作為踏出家鄉的第一步，從整理舊空間到將可用的木材保留，作為未來老屋修復可用的資材。經過一年的投入，已逐步看出「米克斯」複合式藝術空間的願景。

不同於其他老屋修復大多是以餐飲為訴求，「米克斯」嘗試結合戲劇、展演、音樂、舞蹈各種形式的展演空間，讓劇場空間較缺乏的嘉義，又多了一處年輕人與學生可揮灑的舞台。然而，在夢想實現的背後，有多少的喜悅與需要克服的瓶頸，再再考驗修屋者的智慧。藉由「米克斯」修屋的歷程，希望能引發更多人對老屋修復的關注。
