Lying amid an expanse of green tea plantations, Wuhe (舞鶴) in Hualien is an important area for tea production in Taiwan and renowned for its exceptionally distinctive tea cultivars. With a rich abundance of natural resources and over one-third of Wuhe Elementary School students’ parents engaged in the tea industry, the school has embraced tea as an important area of study for many years.

Under the guidance of expert tea growers, work in the school’s own tea garden is divided up amongst the schoolchildren, allowing them to learn valuable lessons from the process of growing tea. Even while under the blazing sun, the children seem content and happy with watering and weeding the tea plants. Using local resources, Wuhe Elementary School continuously nurtures the children’s local identity through education, helping them to slowly grow and flourish just like the tea plants.
