However, it was especially after Pinochet's September 1973 the U.S.-backed coup that the group Inti-Illimani made it famous.During the course of time the song has been used in various protests, and it has been translated into various languages. 
In 1979 the "Islamic Revolution" the melody was used for a revolutionary song with Persian lyrics entitled "Barpakhiz" ("Stand up"), by the Iranian leftist activists during the Revolution against the monarchy.
In 1979, "The People United Will Never Be Defeated!" was chanted at the White Night riots after the sentencing of former San Francisco supervisor Dan White in the murders of George Moscone and Harvey Milk. White only served 5 years of a 7 year sentence. 
In 1983, during the "Resistance March" (Marcha de la resistencia) in Argentina, the song was revived with the lyrics "Resulta indispensable, aparicion con vida y castigo a los culpables" ("It's essential that they return the disappeared, and that the guilty are punished"). The song was still being sang in the 2000s in Argentina with the disappearance of Julio Lopez.
In 1995 the Hungarian Ska group Szabad Idők (Free Times) released the song "El Pueblo Unido" on their album Vivan Los Zapatistas!. El Pueblo Unido included lyrics inspired by the Chilean song.
In 2002 Russian singer Garik Sukachev used the phrase in his song "Svobodu Anjele Davis" ("freedom for Angela Davis"). 
In 2006 American hardcore punk band Anti Flag performed a version of El Pueblo in English at the Reading Festival. 
In 2004 Ukrainian rap band GreenJolly paraphrased this song to create "Razom nas bahato" ("Together We Are Many") during the first days of Orange Revolution. This song was the Ukraine's entry at the 2005 Eurovision Song Contest.
In 2007, during the Greek general elections, the song was used during the main campaign of the left party SYRIZA (Coalition of the Radical Left) and it figured on the party's televised message.
In the protests in Tunis in 2010 and 2011 that lead to the ousting of president Ben Ali, protesters chanted on the same rhythm the phrase "الشعب يريد إسقاط النظام" which translates to "The people want the regime down". The same phrase was chanted for the first time in Tahrir square in Egypt on 25 January 2011 in what turned into massive protests that lead to the ousting of president Hosni Mubarak.

Party is PARTY part 1，主題就是318的45天前！賤民解放區是在318時期成立的，但若要辦一場屬於我們的派對，我們不辦在318一週年那天，卻要辦在318一週年的45天前，WHY？318的45天之前，大家在幹什麼？大概不太記得了吧！但有些事情總是不曾被記起、也不曾被完全遺忘，而且，也不曾真正結束。在318的45天前，或者在每次盛大運動的45天之後，政府繼續貪贓枉法、賤民依然活在城市的夾縫、天光永遠只照到島嶼的中央，但革命的力量持續在這骯髒的、散發著惡臭的城市夾縫中，在賤民的流竄之中聚集、串連並湧動著。

只要講到年輕世代的反抗力量，大家都要講318，專家學者也要提一下太陽花世代（以前好像也曾經有個跟花還是水果有關的世代？），那麼，我們也用派對（結黨）的方法來講好了。如果說318是個「光芒萬千」、被反覆提及、一攪再攪的神秘空間，那麼它的45天前，或45天後，這些「被神遺棄」的日子，則都是屬於我們的永恆輪迴。每一個再平常也不過的日子，我們早已存在這座島嶼上，卑微地、堅定地、狂歡地、糾眾地，實現反叛力量。前景未明，卻充滿無限可能。

這天，將結合樂團、電音、滑板、電影、BDSM、烤肉、火鍋、啤酒、社運抗爭影像無限放送，從下午四點直到晚上十二點。在這邊，肯定可以找到你要的：想講話的，來！想無厘頭的，來！有樂器的通通拿來、想跳舞的儘管跳來，哩來哩來，攏來攏來！這是場「party」，也是場「PARTY」！讓我們在318的45天前聚在一起！
