Colored murals beatify riverbank in hope of reinventing Zhu River
Located in the South District of Tainan City, East Route Drain (東幹線排水溝) in Zhuxi Village used to be known as Zhuxi River (竹溪). Fortunately, as a result of recent improvements in the sewage treatment system, the drainage ditch now has the possibility of being returned to its former glory as Zhuxi River. The village mayor hopes to use ecology and culture to make Zhuxi River an important landmark of the village.
Following extended discussions between Jiang Yi-yu (江翊瑜) and the mayor, it was decided to set the theme for the murals as ‘Misty Zhuxi River.’ The murals convey ecological scenes from along the watercourse, including the black-crowned night heron, little egret and Japanese white-eye etc., as well as ‘Zhuxi Temple,’ which was the first Buddhist temple in Taiwan. The creativity of combining culture and environmental conservation is helping to restore the beauty of ancient Zhuxi.
