Community elders get moving with musical calisthenics
“Musical calisthenics begins at 8.30 am sharp each weekday, followed with a course in eco-handcrafts at 10.30” – This is a typical morning for elderly people attending daycare centers in Nanxin Community, Qishan District, Kaohsiung. In addition to removing a degree of boredom from their life, the use of relaxing music also helps elderly people reach a level of physical fitness, invigorates their body and mind, and eliminates stress through physical exercise.
Faced with an aging population, Nanxin Commity set up a new daycare center for elderly residents that provides not only healthy food, but also offers classes in reading, sign language, eco-handcrafts, mind-body stimulation, recycling and recreational group activities. Through providing a rich variety of activities in their twilight years, the center hopes to delay the effects of aging in elderly people, while at the same time reducing dependence on their children and promoting harmony in the family.
