Northeastern Clown Fish repopulation program
With a black body and two distinct white stripes, Taiwan’s native clown fish (also known as Clark's anemonefish) is a famous denizen in the northeast of the country. Unfortunately, a combination of environmental destruction, pollution, and excessive capture has triggered a steep decline in their numbers. In response to this worrying decline in fish numbers, scuba diving enthusiast Fan Shu-ming (范書銘) decided to instigate a clown fish repopulation program. Using an abalone breeding pool as a halfway house, the immature clown fish and sea anemones were allowed to live in a symbiotic relationship, and on release, each sea anemone concealed an average of three to ten clown fish within.
Now in its third year, the repopulation program has already successfully released three hundred clown fish and kept a close track of the fish’s paring status. Recently, foreign countries have been relentlessly pushing for the clown fish to be added to a list of protected species and Fan Shu-ming has used an Internet fundraising platform to raise money for this repopulation program. It is hoped that the program will raise people’s awareness of marine biodiversity.
