Tobacco house falls into state of disrepair
The rich 60-year history of the Fu Family Tobacco House provides a comprehensive record of the role tobacco cultivation once played in Koahsiung’s Meinong District. Although the building has suffered earthquake damage over the years, the exterior is still in good condition and its quaint appearance attracts countless tourists.
After the tobacco house’s structure was damaged in the Jiaxian Earthquake of March 2010, Kaohsiung City Government put the structure on a list of dangerous buildings, affixing a red notice warning of the dangerous condition and politely refusing entry to visitors. In spite of the fact that on pulling back the blockade tape it is clear the building is in a dangerous condition, four years after the earthquake visitors are still coming, raising serious questions over public safety.
