Harvest festival at Nanhe Village - joyful millet weightlifting
Annual indigenous harvest festivals abound between the months of July and September. In former years, the standard competitive lifting weight in Pingtung’s Nanhe Village was 200 to 400 kg; this year, however, in a bid to rekindle traditional customs, the lifting weight of millet has been reduced to 180 kg, not only attracting many more participants to the competition, but also bringing the village’s main street back to life with a real flavor of the traditional life.
‘Papuljiva’ is another ceremony held at the harvest festival, where in the darkness of night, young people from the tribe tie five pieces of wood together and deliver them to the home of a girl as a sign of their adoration; sometimes the same ceremony is carried out by at least 100 men, who work together to deliver 100 pieces of wood. Provided there is mutual consent, the families of boys and girls who are not yet of age can carry out the ceremony on their behalf. Sometimes the chiefs of tribes also use the ceremony to convey sentiments that are viewed as an action of alliance.
