Following the end of demonstrations over public issues, as the original passion fades people gradually forget about the issue. However, come rain or shine, for over a year on Fridays at six o’clock, a group of people have been gathering at Liberty Square (自由廣場) to express their aspirations towards public issues and listen to the voices of others.
The Five Six Movement (五六運動) started following the anti-nuclear demonstrations in March 2013 and to date is already in its seventy-fourth week. This movement was initially launched by a number of Taiwanese directors who decided that as anti-nuclear demonstrations over the years had failed to change the government’s nuclear policy, a weekly “No Fourth Nuclear Plant, Five Six Movement” should be held each Friday evening in Liberty Square, where with a ‘gentle but firm’ show of strength, anti-nuclear sentiments could be expressed.
During Five Six Movement gatherings, various other civic organizations have come to Liberty Square to express their own demands. Due to the fact that the Five Six Movement didn’t dissipate following the government’s announcement that it was halting construction work on the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant, Five Six Movement has been transformed into the Five Six Movement Civic Forum, providing civic groups and citizens a platform to voice out.
Transformative civic forum continues the spirit of Five Six Movement
