‘Frog lady’ Xiao Su Shu-zhen strives for tree frog conservation

In Taipei’s Zhoneqiang Park (中強公園), ‘frog lady’ Xiao Su Shu-zhen (蕭蘇淑貞) is the driving force behind conservation of the Taipei tree frog.  She said that following the building of Xinyi Expressway and Xinyi MRT Line, Taipei tree frogs in the local area have become extremely rare. In order to provide Taipei tree frogs with an ideal habitat, the frog lady has personally spent hundreds of US dollars in hiring excavators to dig an ecological pond.

However, the frog lady’s passion for saving the tree frog has been misunderstood by some local residents who accused her of raising frogs to sell to local restaurants under the pretext of ‘conservation’ - despite this attack on her reputation, she has pressed on with determination. Having formerly held the position of director general at the local community development association, the frog lady has been successful in enlisting many friends from the community into her conservation ranks, further helping in the tree frog conservation struggle. She hopes that many more people will listen to her story and continue with the tree frog conservation work that she has started.

樹蛙媽媽蕭蘇淑貞致力保育樹蛙

台北市的中強公園有一位熱心的樹蛙媽媽蕭蘇淑貞，是保育台北樹蛙的最大幕後推手，隨著信義快速道路與捷運信義線接連動工，導致附近的樹蛙越來越少見。樹蛙媽媽為了提供樹蛙一個良好的棲地，她自費數萬元，請怪手開挖生態池。但樹蛙媽媽的這份愛心也曾遭到誤解，鄰居指稱，她打著「復育」的名號，其實是在養殖，打算賣給餐廳做「三杯田雞」，面對外界的嘲諷，雖然打擊很大，但她仍努力的堅持下去。曾擔任社區發展協會理事長的樹蛙媽媽，都會邀請社區朋友們一同參與保育樹蛙的行列。她希望有更多人能聽見她的故事，將保育的工作繼續傳承下去。
