Highway toll stations close
Due to the arrival of electronic toll collection, on December 30, 2013, manned ticket collection became a thing of the past on the nation’s highways.
Correspondingly, tollbooths at all stations will be closed and are earmarked for demolition within twenty days.
The lonely Dounan toll station on Zhongshan Road, at the border of Chiayi and Yunlin is one such place, where ticket collectors reluctantly faced their final day on the job.
As employees punctually arrived to clock in for work, on the face of things, it appeared as though everything was normal.
However, when in addition to collecting fees, employees began exchanging hugs and consoling each other, it was clear that the familiar scene of people collecting fees at our tollbooths was indeed quickly fading into history.
V8 in hand, even the police were moved to record this part of transport history, for in the future, such scenes will only be available for view in recorded footage.
