Passing through the disaster – Zheng Chun-mei fights to revive the Tsou people
In 2009, Typhoon Morakot inflicted heavy damage on Laiji Village (來吉部落) in Alishan. Over the past few years, Tsou woman Zheng Chun-mei (鄭春美) has assiduously worked to gain a profession and open the “Tsou Women’s Workshop (鄒族女人的工藝房)”, which is hidden within row after row of post-disaster emergency shelters. It was here after the disaster, left with literally nothing, that Zheng Chun-mei resolved to stand up strong and participate in a post-disaster art program – a process that transformed her from novice to expert.
She has utilized her own post-disaster experience to encourage other women in the tribe, saying: “As long as you’re willing, you can definitely do it.” After the fierce assault of typhoon Morakot, Zheng Chun-mei showed strong determination to persevere and confront a whole array of difficulties. She has always believed that through working hard and refusing to give up, one day she could retrieve back the light of hope in life.
