Recently, as the food-safety problem continues to intensify, the GM issue has been dragged into the spotlight. This special report introduces the current problems in Taiwan’s agricultural sector and the myth of increased yields through GM crops. Regardless of whether Taiwan introduces GM crops, the government must begin to start valuing the agricultural sector.

Farmers have continued to decrease in proportion with the unrelenting shrinkage of available farmland. Taiwan cannot merely rely on imports; currently Taiwan is 32% self-sufficient in food - a figure that was close to 95% sixty years ago. If we continue disregarding the importance of food self-sufficiency, Taiwan will face ruin in the impending food crisis.
