Hualong workers rush company over US$10 million arrears in retirement pay

On November 13, Hualong Rescue Association (華隆自救會), which is comprised of 336 retired employees from Hualong Textile Co. (華隆頭份廠), arrived in the north to stage a protest. On the 14th, after sleeping in the railway station overnight, the group of workers, who have already petitioned every government department and bureau in the country, marched in protest to the head office of Hualong Textile Co. in Zhonghe.

Shortly after the group’s arrival, the workers charged into the foyer of the building and began a sit-in protest, demanding that a representative of the company come and talk to them face to face. During the course of events, one of the retired workers from the group fainted and was rushed to hospital - fortunately suffering no serious injury. The workers retired around 10 years ago, and on average are owed US$34000 each, amounting to a total of around US$10 million in retirement pay.

The company management and workers signed an agreement giving between 1 and 3 years retirement money, but the contract has already expired and to date not a penny has been received by workers. Hualong Rescue Association has made repeated visits to Taipei, formerly even staging an all-night vigil at the Council of Labor Affairs. Though appeals to Miaoli County Government and The Executive Yuan have both proved fruitless, the group would rather die than give up the fight, and are ready to take their protest to the next level.

華隆欠退休金3.01億 退休人員衝總公司 要資方出面

由336名華隆頭份廠、及台北總公司退休人員組成的「華隆自救會」13日北上抗爭，歷經各部會陳情，在台北車站睡了一晚後，14日前往中和的華隆總公司抗議，並衝進公司一樓廣場靜坐，要資方代表出面。過程中造成一名退休員工暈倒，送醫無大礙。這群「華隆自救會」成員，是自十年前陸續辦理退休的勞工，平均每人遭積欠100萬、共計3.01億退休金。資方曾與員工簽訂退休一年至三年給付完退休金的協議，如今已到期，資方卻分文未給。自救會曾多次北上陳情，並曾夜宿勞委會。求助苗栗縣政府以及中央行政院皆未果，如今他們未來將效法關廠工人臥軌的精神，拉高抗爭的程度。
