Huang Tai-shan stages hunger strike over Council of Agriculture’s indiscriminate capture of stray animals
Disease-prevention measures introduced by the government following the rabies panic that swept over Taiwan in response to the ferret-badger biting incident - including increasing the capture and culling of stray animals - has come under heavy criticism by members of the public.
In record temperatures of 39.3 degrees, the hottest day for a hundred years, animal-rights activist Huang Shan-tai (黃泰山) entered the fourth day of a hunger strike. Huang Shan-tai said the current hunger strike was aimed at forcing the government to immediately halt the inhumane capture and culling of stray animals and instead adopt a system of neutering and vaccinating, which he believes would better aid the disease-prevention effort. After four days and 78 hours of the hunger strike, Huang Shan-tai began feeling unwell and was rushed to National Taiwan University Hospital for urgent care.
