Loneliest weather station in Taiwan – 40 years at Bilu River
Bilu River, located 2100 meters above sea level near Hehuanshan (合歡山), is not only a mountaineering paradise but also home to Bilu River Weather Station (畢祿溪工作站), where each day at at 9 a.m., meteorological observations are recorded.
The job is carried out by two alternating shift workers, who must traverse the steep and slippery access road in a sturdy off-road vehicle before beginning their long and tiring 10-day shifts. Occasionally, teams of river tracers pass by the isolated weather station, but these are few and far between - perhaps one every two weeks; making it possibly the loneliest weather station and work location in Taiwan.
