Japan’s discovery of geothermal springs in Taiwan’s Beitou district back in 1895, began a 100-year love affair with the hot-spring culture in the area. This simple, time-honored village fuses remnants of the Japanese occupation of Taiwan with that of the local Ketagalan tribal culture.

The planned Beitou Cable Car route will cover 4.8km and transport 2,000 people per hour, ascending from Beitou to Longfeng Valley before proceeding up to Yangmingshan Park and the terminal station further up the mountain. Besought with corruption, environmental problems and issues concerning the destruction of cultural assets, with thirty-three years already passing since former president Lee Tung-hui first proposed this controversial plan, it is clear that much careful consideration should be taken before proceeding.
