Nantou Qingjing B & B shock! Slaughter of protected Muntjac!
Citizen journalist Fu Dong-sen was shocked and dismayed after clicking on a Facebook photo link from someone who had visited a B & B in Qingjing, Nantou. The pictures detailed a Muntjac’s slaughter and subsequent journey to become a steaming delicacy on the person’s dining table.
After following the link to the B & B’s website, the CJ contacted the Forestry Bureau’s Conservation Division. Guan Li-hao, the person in charge of the division said that according to Wildlife Conservation Act provisions, without applying for permission in advance, any slaughter of wild Muntjac was an offense punishable in law by a prison sentence of six months to five years, in combination with a fine of between 200,000 and 1 million NTD. However, the Muntjac is a species that can be kept legally, sold by breeders and slaughtered, and there is no control of reared numbers. Legislation merely prohibits the illegal slaughter of wild Muntjac, and so on receiving a report from the public, the relevant authority must first clarify with the suppliers before it is able to confirm whether the animal is illegal. The CJ believes that regardless of whether the action is illegal, people can choose where they spend their money, and should boycott this kind of establishment.
