Chiayi City Government’s ‘Lantan Car-free Day’ (蘭潭無車日) is aimed at providing citizens with a clean green space for exercising on weekends. Although the authorities have installed barriers and placed notification of vehicle restrictions, failure to station any government officials on the spot to enforce the restrictions has resulted in many citizens ignoring the restrictions and entering the restricted zone. In spite of car-parking facilities being established at both ends of the car-free zone, many people still feel the initiative is extremely inconvenient. Due to mixed public opinion regarding the car-free zone Chiayi City Government is endeavoring to improve the initiative, and in the process of considering whether officials should be dispatched to enforce restrictions. Science and technology assistant at Chiayi City Transportation Department, Xie Pei-rong (謝佩蓉) said: “ In addition to public notices, the police have been requested to provide assistance in patrolling the car-free zone. Although some may feel the initiative is inconvenient, since the car-free zone is the result of numerous requests from Chiayi citizens, we hope that for the time being people will cooperate. The initiative will definitely continue until the end of the year. As for next year, this will be decided after a comprehensive evaluation has been conducted”. With such mixed public opinion towards Lantan Car-free Day it is clear that the authorities will need to make improvements and solve some of the existing problems. However, only through cultivating a correct moral attitude can Chiayi citizens be assured of a safe and comfortable green exercise space.

嘉義市政府所推行的「蘭潭無車日」計畫，在每週日上午設置無車專區，希望為民眾創造清新的運動環境。管制的路段由蘭潭泛月廣場至濟福宮，雖然出入口設置了禁止車輛進入的告示牌，卻沒有人員實際進行管制，導致許多車輛無視管制而在區域內行駛。雖然無車專區兩側設有停車場，車輛管制仍然造成許多不便，許多居民對於無車計畫有不同的看法與建議。對於飽受爭議的無車日計畫，政府單位將設法改善，並決定審慎考量無車專區管制的必要性。嘉義市政府交通處觀光科技佐謝佩蓉表示，有請警察局加派人手巡邏，也有發佈公告，就民眾不方便來講的話，希望居民能夠多多配合，因為也是重視喜歡無車日活動的民眾的聲音，計畫會先持續到今年底，明年的話會再評估還要不要繼續辦無車日這個活動。對於「蘭潭無車日」的車輛行駛狀況，民眾各持著不同的看法，政府應設法改善現有的問題，而民眾也需要培養正確的道德觀念，才能創造安全又舒適的休閒運動步道。
