Helping our farmers
The sweet potatoes, rice, eggs, shaddocks, ginger, and vegetables of all kinds laid before my eyes amid the smoke from burning joss sticks at Hsiahai City God Temple (霞海城隍廟), is the work of a young volunteer group named ‘The Good Helpers’. They have taken the initiative of organizing the ‘Help our Farmers’ movement, which hopes to assist farmers sell their produce direct to the public, cutting out middlemen and thereby giving both the farmer and consumer a better deal. The person behind all the activities, from ‘Help our Farmers’ to ‘One person, One Veg’ and ‘Temporary Grandkids’ is Huang Rong-dun. He has managed to enlist the participation of many youngsters in the village schemes, helping Taiwan’s indigenous farmers to shift slow-moving produce, gain a more reasonable price and bring the public’s attention to this problem. The schemes are supported by many university students who are able to participate in the activity as part of an internship.
