Saving XiShanLi District’s Precious Banyan Trees

The banyan trees of XiShanLi District in Kaohsiung City are facing a migration crisis!  Local residents have pointed out that although the small park was only finished in recent years, now due to a new planning initiative the authorities wish to move both the park facilities and indeed the banyan trees to a new location.  The most ludicrous thing about the whole situation however is the reasons given by the authorities for the planned move, the main one being that after a banyan tree fell onto a parked car the authorities were sued, the other being that the banyan trees are diseased.  From what locals can see there are around only ten diseased banyan trees with mushrooms growing on them, however authorities plan to move all the trees from this flourishing little park and literally replace everything!   Locals are demanding that Kaohsiung City Government temporarily suspend construction and give a full explanation for their conduct. In addition, locals hope that the authorities will be willing to meet with local NGO’s and local residents to discuss the difficulties and find a better way to resolve the situation.

高雄市西山里社區老樹面臨遷移危機，居民指出，社區公園週遭的花台是近幾年才作好的工程，現在?了一個新的設計案，竟然要移除原本的老樹及公園所有設施。荒謬的是，移樹的理由是曾有一棵樹倒下壓到汽車，車主申請國賠；另一個理由是老榕樹生病了。居民勘查發現，長了蕈類的老榕樹不到十棵，原本綠意盎然的小公園卻全部要移除，只?更換一個新的公園？居民要求高雄市政府，暫停施工，並提出說明，與在地居民和民間相關團體，共同討論更佳的規劃方案。
