Houdong coal mining exhibition: Traveling back into a coal miner’s world

文字-A A +A

During the 1950s and 1960s, coal mining was a booming industry in Taiwan, and the important mining town of Ruifang in the north of Taiwan attracted a significant number of miners. Through the years, the mines gradually closed and the history of Taiwan’s coal mining days were forgotten. Today, however, a number of retired miners passionate about the industry’s history have built a coal-mining center where they exhibit old photos, video footage and other related paraphernalia. Through the exhibition, they hope to acquaint more people with Taiwan’s glorious coal mining past.

Thanks to the dedication of ordinary people joining the CJ ranks, citizen journalism is able to cover important grassroots issues that the mainstream media neglect. With real sentiments and identification with the subject matter, CJs produce reports with a warmth that touches people’s hearts. Below is a specially selected series of reports on the coal-mining exhibition. Enjoy!
